Last week, pupils from St Charles Catholic Primary School set off on an exciting residential adventure to Derwent Hill in the Lake District near Keswick. Travelling alongside our friends from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, the children shared a coach journey that quickly helped them come together as one group. By the time they arrived, they were ready to enjoy a few days of challenge, teamwork, and unforgettable experiences.
As soon as the pupils stepped off the coach, they were encouraged to take part in activities that were both fun and rewarding. They enjoyed canoeing on the peaceful waters of Derwent Water, hill walking across beautiful landscapes, ghyll scrambling through flowing streams, taking on the low ropes course, braving the big swing, and exploring the spectacular natural surroundings of the national park.
Derwent Hill is well known for offering high quality outdoor education that helps young people prepare for the challenges of school, work, and life. Through real adventures in the outdoors, pupils are given opportunities to build confidence, develop resilience, grow their social skills, and strengthen their ability to work well as part of a team. The centre carefully balances challenge and support, making sure that every child takes away something valuable from their visit.
The staff who accompanied the trip were extremely proud of how well our St Charles pupils represented the school. They mixed easily with pupils from St Joseph’s, encouraged one another, and showed kindness and determination throughout every activity. Whether they were climbing steep paths or paddling across the water, the children pushed themselves and celebrated each other’s achievements. Many pupils surprised themselves with what they were able to do when they tried something new and persevered.
For some of our pupils, this was their first time away from home, while others were experiencing the dramatic scenery of the Lake District for the very first time. Over the course of the week, their confidence grew, and children who had arrived feeling a little nervous became more adventurous and enthusiastic with every challenge they faced.
When the pupils returned home at the end of the week, they brought back so much more than muddy clothes. They returned with new friendships, important new skills, and memories that will stay with them for years to come. Their time at Derwent Hill allowed them to explore, reflect, and discover what they can achieve when they believe in themselves and support one another.
It was a week full of learning, laughter, and adventure, and one that our St Charles pupils will remember for a very long time.
